Problem
Policy professionals struggled with outdated analytical tools that limited their effectiveness in data-driven decision making. Traditional training failed to bridge the gap between basic programming concepts and real-world policy analysis applications. As a result, many public policy professionals remain locked into using expensive and outdated proprietary software ill-equipped for analysing the types of datasets seen in real-world policy analysis. Analysts faced data visualization bottlenecks, reproducibility challenges, and cross-disciplinary barriers that prevented effective collaboration on complex policy problems.
Approach
I developed a comprehensive six-week online course specifically designed for policy professionals, researchers, and consultants. The curriculum focused on practical applications, covering fundamental programming concepts through to advanced data visualization and automation techniques. Each session combined R instruction with realistic policy scenarios using a hypothetical country framework, enabling working professionals to apply technical skills outside their familiar contexts. The methodology emphasized immediate workplace application with materials tailored to policy analysis needs and structured evaluation for continuous improvement.
